The Diesel engine was invented in the late 19th century by German Rudolf Diesel. Diesel fuel is typically distilled from petroleum, but more recently there are also alternatives such as biodiesel. Diesel fuel distilled from petroleum is sometimes referred to as petrodiesel or petroleum diesel. Rudolf Diesel designed the engine to run on vegetable oil rather than on petrodiesel, and is even disputed not to actually have been the original inventor of the diesel engine.
Diesel fuel is one of the many products that can be extracted from crude oil, usually by distillation. Some of the many other products that come from crude oil are gasoline, kerosene, motor oil, asphalt, and some waxes. Diesel is a hydrocarbon mixture which is less dense than gasoline.
Diesel engines are often preferred because of their fuel efficiency, greater power, and lower cost of diesel fuel. Diesel fuel has more pollutants than gasoline, but since it burns more efficiently (has more energy content per liter than gasoline), it actually emits less carbon dioxide in the exhaust overall compared to gasoline.
Speaking of POWER, diesel engines have a higher compression than standard gasoline engines which gives them more power and torque. Therefore, they are often employed in high torque engines, such as trucks and construction equipment.
Magnaflow Exhaust Systems
Magnaflow is the world's expert on exhaust systems, especially diesel exhaust systems. Magnaflow is a subsidiary of Car Sound Exhaust Systems, Inc, a leader in exhausts for over 25 years. Magnaflow Exhaust has partnered with Mario Andretti, and has been awarded the ISO-9001 certificate assuring high quality.
Many Magnaflow exhaust systems are cat-back, meaning that everything past the catalytic converter to the final vent to open is included (exhaust pipes, muffler, tailpipe and sometimes the exhaust tip). Some Magnaflow exhaust systems (especially diesel exhaust systems) are turbo-back, meaning the hardware included is from the outlet of the turbocharger to the final vent to open air.
